ROE Roofing’s charity shows the business cares about St. Albertans

What a wonderful story in the Dec. 12 Gazette about ROE Roofing and its kind gesture by providing a roof for someone who desperately needs it without cost. You know, it doesn’t surprise me in a way.

You know, it doesn’t surprise me in a way. I hired these guys to do a piddly job of re-shingling a small shed for me. Most outfits just wouldn’t bother with me. Others just quoted a price that was crazy (got rid of me). These folks care.

My experience with this company was exceptional – efficient, professional and very personal with their customer relations – I don’t intend this to be a commercial. But let’s remember a couple of things – this is a relatively small company; this is a local company; and that is what makes this such an important story.

Too often we are guilty (and at times I’m guilty, too) of dealing with online or out-of-town businesses because of cost and/or convenience. It is our local businesses that pay taxes to our city. In many cases, the owners and workers also live right here in St. Albert. They are our neighbours and are our fellow taxpayers.

I recall how in the past when we in Saint Albert Minor Baseball relied on local businesses like the Grandin Bakery, Sport Shop, LBH Hardware and a place called Webb Hardware (on St. Anne Street) that sponsored uniforms for our Mosquito, Beaver, Bantam and Midget house league ball teams.

We should remember our hometown businesses when we spend our money. They also put their money back into our town in more ways than one.

Good on you, ROE Roofing. Take a bow. That’s really a Christmas spirit!

Bert LaBuick, St. Albert
