Respect plebiscite decision on the library

I am writing this letter in response to the article in (Gazette, Nov. 8) "Motions to stop library planning fail." I could not believe just how much disrespect the new council has shown for the wishes of the people of St. Albert.

I am writing this letter in response to the article in (Gazette, Nov. 8) "Motions to stop library planning fail." I could not believe just how much disrespect the new council has shown for the wishes of the people of St. Albert. We just went through an election, to try and fix the dysfunction that was prevalent with the old council and it looks like nothing has changed. The people of St. Albert clearly put their thoughts forward with the plebiscite during the election and an overwhelming 63 per cent said they were against going forward with the borrowing for a branch library. That should be the marching orders for this council. Coun. Wes Brodhead stated that while he was campaigning, he heard that people were reluctant to borrow but were not opposed to the concept of a branch library. Did he not see the results of the plebiscite, 63 per cent said no. It doesn’t matter what he said he heard while on the campaign trail. The people of the city have spoken. Mayor Cathy Heron says that we should keep the borrowing bylaw open, in case there are further discussions on the library expansion. The plebiscite told her this was a no-go, how much clearer can it be stated: 63 per cent. If council wishes to look at other alternatives, that’s within their purview, but not borrowing to do it. The people don’t want to waste their money on a library at this time. They do not want to borrow money plain and simple. You asked the question, now listen to the answer. What this city doesn’t need is another self-serving council, that will only pass motions that they personally agree with. You are there to serve the community so let’s serve the community. R. Irvine, St. Albert
