Remove the barriers

Further to Lois Markell's letter "We are not disabled" (Gazette, Oct. 22), let's start calling "handicapped parking" spots "accessible parking" spots.

Further to Lois Markell's letter "We are not disabled" (Gazette, Oct. 22), let's start calling "handicapped parking" spots "accessible parking" spots. The intent is to accommodate people who have restricted mobility – seniors who tire walking, people with broken legs, people who use wheelchairs – not handicapped people.

Who is a “handicapped person?” If you don't encounter a barrier, you are not “handicapped.” All people are handicapped when faced with barriers to accessibility.
