Sarge was a beautiful German Shepherd who lived a difficult life in St. Albert. His owner was unable to responsibly care for him in terms of providing housing; food and unconditional love. Sarge was a “poor” dog living in a wealthy community.
You may remember Sarge, he and his owner were frequently seen walking around town and at St. Albert Place. He was a quiet dog with sad brown eyes. Many of the people who saw and interacted with Sarge were caring and concerned citizens and employees. These special St. Albert citizens and employees fed and provided shelter for Sarge as much as they could. They advocated for his needs and tried to ensure that he was treated well.
This advocacy for Sarge included animal welfare organizations and St. Albert bylaw. It is clear that the animal welfare organizations are stymied by poorly inadequate laws to protect animals and unfortunately Sarge's situation was not deemed to be serious for bylaw to intervene and be effective.
Sadly, Sarge passed away before Christmas. The compassionate St. Albert citizens and employees who heard of Sarge's passing were devastated by the loss of such a wonderful creature.
Thank you to those kind and caring citizens, employees and business owners who supported Sarge during the last year of his life. Be assured that he experienced and knew your love for him.
As Mahatma Gandhi eloquently stated “To my mind, the life of a lamb is no less precious than that of a human being. The more helpless the creature, the more that it is entitled to protection by man from the cruelty of man.”
