'Reassessment of history'

Jared Milne, we applaud you for your thought-provoking and confronting article on how non-native Canadians can reconsider history and the present-day circumstances we find ourselves in. For our part, as St. Albert is a historic Métis community, we are proud that Louis Riel, the Métis and First Nations peoples, and the Cree language are represented throughout the city.

It is interesting, Robert K. Lane, that when referencing Louis Riel, you use the words rebel, involvement in murder, and mental health problems, but when referencing Canadian soldiers, they are depicted as “defending the country as best they could” and as capturing rebels. Further, Louis Riel has been recognized as a Father of Confederation, as a wronged man and as a defender of his people (thecanadianencyclopedia.ca).

It is precisely this reassessment of history that Jared Milne has sought to point out.

Jarod and Avery Letendre, St. Albert
