Ravaging city ornamental gardens for rhubarb

I thought we had dealt with this last year, but apparently not everyone got the message.

On Saturday, June 30, at 12:30 p.m., a red Mazda SUV containing a white-bearded gentleman with baseball cap and his bespectacled female companion found it necessary to ravage the rhubarb display in the Ornamental Garden on Mission Avenue, part of the Founders’ Walk. They spent a good 10 minutes stripping the leaves off the stalks, and managed to harvest enough to fill the nearby garbage bin up to the brim with the discarded foliage.

This area was made for the public to visit and enjoy, a place to stop and reflect on the beauty of nature and how fortunate we are to be citizens of St. Albert. Would this couple dare to go to St. Albert Place and start picking marigolds from the flower beds? It’s the same thing – damages come out of the taxpayers’ wallets. Maybe they thought no one would notice, or that their actions were inconsequential. Let’s hope there are not another dozen entitled residents out there or there will be nothing left to display.

Next time, check out the recently installed St. Albert Food Forest that is only a hundred metres south on Meadowview Drive. They have plenty of free rhubarb there for the taking.
