Proposed tax increase questioned

Hints of a proposed tax increase of 3.1% have me thinking that city council has once again left the reality bus. I recently participated in a phone survey for the city on three proposed improvements, an ice facility, the pool and the library.

Hints of a proposed tax increase of 3.1% have me thinking that city council has once again left the reality bus. I recently participated in a phone survey for the city on three proposed improvements, an ice facility, the pool and the library. It basically came down to which one was more important to me and the acceptance of a 2.5 to 2.75% increase to my property taxes to pay for one of them. I indicated I was not willing to pay any increase for any of them.

We are still in a recession. Families are attempting to live on one income earner in the family if they even have that. The majority of us do not get increases. The job losses continue daily and trying to stay afloat is becoming impossible for a lot of people.

What are these 24 new growth initiatives? Hopefully not silly roundabouts that cost the taxpayers a bundle and accomplish little as far as improving lives of the taxpayers in the city.

I know it must be difficult to picture yourself in a have-not situation but that is the reality of the economic situation these days. You may all want to try walking a few miles in the shoes of people facing daily struggles to make ends meet. The looming possibility of another tax increase in this city may be the deciding factor for some people to choose to move elsewhere.

Election for a new mayor and council is next year. With all the irresponsible spending and the lack of responsible common sense, I think it is time for a major overhaul at city hall.
