Problems with countdown pedestrian lights in St. Albert

What happened to the "countdown" lights that only work now if a pedestrian touches the walk light? I was almost involved in an accident as the light turned yellow as I got to the intersection.

I was almost involved in an accident as the light turned yellow as I got to the intersection. A car from the opposite direction turned left in front of me. This occurred on a road that has 60 km/h as the posted speed. I can drive slower as I approach an intersection but the cars behind me are so close I can’t see their headlights. Slowing down only fosters more angry drivers who have to go around me.

I realize that having the countdown lights means there will be drivers who speed up when they see the time remaining. What is going to happen when winter arrives and the streets are slippery? I am 68 years old and never had a ticket or accident. Hopefully the countdown lights will be active soon.
