Many ways to address problem of overt racism

I was surprised when I read the “commentary” by Brian McLeod regarding racism ( St. Albert Gazette , Nov. 10). He might also have mentioned the other MLA, Marie Renaud, instead of simply referring to “our elected NDP MLA Trevor Horne.

He might also have mentioned the other MLA, Marie Renaud, instead of simply referring to “our elected NDP MLA Trevor Horne." Completeness is a merit, Mr. McLeod. I am certain that Ms. Renaud is strongly opposed to racism.

The headline states: “Racism is a vile belief." The vast majority of St. Albertans surely accept that, so why give publicity to the very small racist minority? Positive thinking is constructive and is also a merit, Mr. McLeod.

Overt examples of racism, either to persons of colour or to Indigenous peoples, can unfortunately be seen occasionally within St. Albert. Authorities should be called in, rather than use of personal intervention. Churches and schools can invite Indigenous persons and perhaps police officers to illustrate how the law can work to protect the legal rights of minorities.

I greatly respect our freedom of speech and that freedom gives both Mr. McLeod and I opportunity to present our views.
