In response to the Your Views letter (Gazette, May 17) from Judy Hutchinson entitled: “Same old letter topics from curmudgeons…” My first comment is an advisory to the author that one should not cast labels upon others unless they are absolutely certain that the same attribution does not befit themselves as well. Personally, anyone can call me whatever they wish, whereby my usual reaction is to first consider the source before attaching a level of credibility or importance to the comment. This case is no exception.
It is interesting if not outright amazing that the persons who organized and worked the petition to place the issue of the Library Borrowing Bylaw before the public managed in a very short time to find over 6,700 apparent ‘curmudgeons’ who were ready and willing to sign. Those signatories represented an estimated eighty per cent or more of those who were canvassed. If you do the math and extrapolate the results to the total population of St. Albert, it is obvious that Ms. Hutchinson seriously erred in her reference to a small vocal minority. Further, if in her review of the letters posted during her time away she would have encountered my own letter entitled; “A few words on democracy…” in which I promote the concept of Participatory Democracy which is exactly what those involved in and supportive of the petition put into practice.
