City parks are closed after 11 p.m. I didn't know this and parked in a lot.
If you do make this mistake the police have the right to block in your vehicle and shine lights in your face as they grill you to find out why you are there. They will probably ask you if you are going to do drugs or other illicit activities. The experience made me angry and I feel like a right of mine has been taken away.
I love the park. Many people in our “botanical arts” city must. It’s a great way to get outside, and honestly, one of the few places that isn't commercialized or full of concrete. The park is an escape from busy urban life. Putting a curfew on the park also puts a limit on that right for recreation, nature and escape.
Those of us who do shift work, however, are up. Granted, we are probably among the minority, of lower income, and citizens of “lesser rights,” yet we too pay taxes for those parks. There are some regular folk who are night owls, or on an occasional sleepless night, who might enjoy the park too.
Being awake at night time is already considered somewhat deviant. Kids aren't allowed out and many people fear danger such as rape, muggings, and other crimes. “Good” and “regular” people are not up walking in the park at night.
I think that reputation is baloney. Night time is one of the most relieving, relaxing and peaceful times to be out. And if all the good people are inside, who is left to reclaim the night? It would be nice if I could enjoy the park at night and not feel like a criminal. Further, is it too ideal to imagine a park that would feel safe at night?
