In the March 12 Gazette Bob Sandford of Epcor stressed the importance of water conservation in the article ‘Think wet for Water Day.’ While I agree that we all need to do our part to conserve water, I would like to comment on the remarks made regarding bottled water.
Even though Edmonton does have a fairly good source of tap water when compared to other municipalities we should not be drinking it without further treatment. Municipal water is treated with chlorine or chloramine (meant to keep water free of bacteria), but it is known to interfere with the thyroid gland and may cause other health issues. Municipal tap water may also contain pharmaceuticals. Drinking bottled or filtered water benefits our health as we avoid the consumption of chemicals and other contaminants that we might otherwise ingest from tap water. We should also try to avoid absorbing chlorine through our skin by using shower and bath filters. A simple Google search regarding chlorine and other contaminants in tap water will provide some insight.
Regarding the cost of bottled water, the health benefits significantly outweigh the cost to consumers. It makes good sense to be able to have the choice to drink water that is beneficial to our health. I invite readers to research the options available in drinking water and make the best decision for you and your family.
