No one disputes the value and usefulness of the library, or the excellent work they do. But we do not need a new one.
Library CEO Peter Bailey's letter (Gazette, Oct. 26) confirms previous statements that a new library is not required to accommodate more people or programs. It's being built to warehouse books. There are numerous options for storing books, rather than spending $20 million.
The letter also confirms that Mr. Bailey continues to be involved in city politics. Being a lobbyist is outside the scope of Mr. Bailey's job. Could you image what would happen if a bank manager held rallies or had petitions signed requesting head office build a new branch because the storage room was too small?
Our property taxes are one of the highest in the province, and are estimated to increase more than 3% in 2017 simply to cover existing programs. Each of the proposed capital projects (library, arena, swimming pool) will increase property taxes by another 2.5% per year for the next 20 years.
It's special interest groups and lobbyists that keep pushing projects that are nice to have vs. need to have that keeps St. Albert in the highest provincial property tax bracket.
