Decades ago, I wrote an environment column in the Gazette. At that time, there was considerable skepticism in Alberta about climate change.
Today, I see quite a positive change in attitudes and so I was disappointed to read about Mayor Nolan Crouse’s apparent position that St. Albert should go slowly with climate change targets while the federal government gets its act together.
The saying, “think globally, but act locally” is made for the subject of climate change. There is an opportunity for council to provide some useful leadership here. If enough communities did that, the feds would perhaps join the fun!
I have to say also that exaggerating this very important issue — such as in the Gazette’s over the top cartoon — is not helpful. It only encourages the skeptics.
