I can’t really see how Cathy Heron can look anyone in the eye and think we can take her logic seriously when she claims justification for supporting taxpayers picking up the tax bill for herself and councillors because their exemption has been withdrawn by a new federal decision (St. Albert Gazette, Sept. 8).
Since when was any salary advertised as take-home pay? I have worked for some 50 years and never was a position advertised as a salary with XXX dollars as after tax. If councillors decided to run for office based on their take-home pay after taxes, so be it, but as a taxpayer, I have no idea what their deductions are and can’t really guarantee them a take-home salary and neither can their employer.
It is really beyond anything to think that a mayor or councillors can’t simply step aside to give other good candidates an opportunity to serve if they feel the money isn’t enough. Just maybe Mayor Heron could think of all the people who lose disposable income every time city councils spends our dollars on whimsical projects.
Cathy, sometimes you take a job and it’s not what it’s cracked up to be, so buck up and do your job or move on, but please don’t try to put your tax problem on our plate because, guess what, it’s already full.
