I have decided to run for a seat on city council this fall and I am currently getting familiarized with duties I would be expected to perform should the folks of St. Albert find me suitable to represent them.
I was presented with a job description of the deputy mayor that I feel the need to share given the recent postings here.
In addition to his or her duties as a member of council, each councillor serves as deputy mayor for a period of two months each year, on a rotational basis in accordance with the schedule adopted by city council at its annual organizational meeting.
The deputy mayor attends all agenda committee meetings with the mayor (approximately three per month). In the absence of the mayor, the deputy mayor performs such functions as chairing council meetings, reviewing council agendas and attending various public relations functions such as ceremonies, banquets and speaking engagements.
In addition, each city councillor may be called upon to perform various duties of the mayor, or the deputy mayor in the absence of these individuals.
Unless somewhere in the city archives there exists a black operations manual, the role of a deputy mayor is really quite simple.
I cannot find any reason why a deputy mayor would need to loiter around the courthouse to hear the outcome of a judge's ruling in a civil matter.
Anyone who is interested can obtain the roles of council from the chief legislative officer at city hall.
