The story in the Gazette Nov. 1 by Victoria Paterson states that City of St. Albert pools are short lifeguards. To say that the City of Edmonton is to blame for our lack of lifeguards for their two new rec centres, is completely inaccurate. Why are young able-bodied St. Albert lifeguards feeling the need to look into an Edmonton Job Page? Wages.
How can lifeguards support themselves, without benefits, on the $14 an hour starting wage in St. Albert. Perhaps this is an obvious reason as to why these young lifeguards are flocking to Edmonton or surrounding communities, where starting wage is $19 to $21 an hour.
If we want to keep our lifeguards, the solution is apparent.
