Re: Liberton Park, my oasis. I am 88 years old and a fit great-grandmother who enjoys walking through the beautiful Liberton family park at the back of our house at 21 Langholm Drive.
Seven years ago, upon my youngest daughter and her generous husband’s invitation, I sold my house in the quiet Wortley Village area of London, Ont. and moved to this beautiful city.
Several times a week I walk through Liberton Park to go to the grocery store or to church. I use the park as a shortcut, when I am returning home from Sobeys with my hands full of groceries. I am nervous that there might be cyclists riding down the hill when I am walking up. If I have to stop walking to get my groceries, it will greatly reduce my independence, which is so important.
I frequently enjoy seeing children play in the park without fear or danger of being hurt by obstacles in their path and thank the foresight of previous administrations and planners for the peace and serenity that families enjoy in this park. Our society is bombarded by noises every hour of every day and to find solace in a peaceful environment in our neighborhood, is both rare and precious to everyone who needs to find peace of mind.
In all seasons, Liberton Park provides what all Canadians cherish: an affordable and enjoyable outing for families of all ages. I fail to understand why city council calls this family park “under-utilized.” I pray that common sense will prevail and that the present city council members will realize that to deface this wonderful family park is a mistake that will prove to be both regretted and very costly in more ways than one.
