Re: ‘Arguments in favour of evolution less than compelling’ and ‘Evolution is just a theory science looks to test and prove,’ March 19 Gazette:
The best thing about humans is that we have opinions. My opinions belong to me, and me alone. I’ve developed my beliefs from listening, researching and experiencing different things in life, and it has lead me to trust in what I believe to be the truth. But whether we believe we were put on earth from God above, or whether we think we evolved from monkeys, it doesn’t matter. And it also doesn’t matter if anyone agrees with them or not.
Though I did not see where the creation vs. evolution argument in the Saturday Gazette began, I still get the gist. What I can’t figure out is if you’re looking to debate an argument as old as time itself, why choose the local newspaper’s opinion section? Not only are you bound to offend countless other readers, but you’re also opening up the floodgates to an issue that pretty much everyone has an opinion on. And to be honest, you probably won’t change anyone’s mind.
I’m not going to tell you what I believe and why I believe it because you have your own beliefs, and in the greater scheme of things, it doesn’t matter to me if you agree with me or not. But if Lee Pasternak and Ian McKerracher want to continue their debate, I suggest they move it to an Internet forum, where there are plenty of anonymous, opinionated, and attention starved people who would love to argue with them. But that’s just my opinion.
