Opposed to Braeside rezoning and land swap

Re: Braeside Rezoning and Land Swap As concerned residents of Braeside, we strongly oppose the rezoning of Sturgeon Road lots 53, 55 and 57 and the land swap that has been included in the developer’s proposal. Our home on Berrymore Drive is steps away from the park proposed to be “traded” to the developer and backs directly onto the Red Willow Trail and the river valley. Every day we see so many residents enjoying these community assets – they are well-used and well-loved parts of an established neighbourhood and contribute to the vitality and appeal of St. Albert. This parkland belongs to the citizens of St. Albert and should be held in trust for future generations and not traded to a developer who stands to profit immensely from this deal. The rezoning of the three lots will negatively affect the character and natural landscape of our neighbourhood and impose a large condo complex along the Sturgeon River. The associated traffic and parking issues in an already congested area are hard to imagine. The current 30 km speed limit on that part of Sturgeon Road is a clear indicator of serious traffic concerns that already exist in this area. It’s time to say “no” to any additional development along the river valley. It’s time to develop a serious, long-range plan to protect and enhance the river valley – we do not have that now. It’s time to let our soon-to-be elected officials know how we feel about proposed developments, such as this, that so threaten the quality of life that we enjoy across St. Albert.
