I am a huge fan of the Gazette, and one of its best sections is the Letters. These are usually very entertaining and often informative. We are blessed with a city council that provides us with much to discuss, like the ducks crawling up the asparagus plants that wave in front of City Hall.
The nature writers, though, could be more active regarding the incredible autumn migration taking place close to St. Albert. Hundreds of tundra swans and dozens of trumpeter swans are coming through. Also, many ducks, geese and shorebirds. Watching snipe, dowitchers, sandpipers and even herons in the snow and by the ice is remarkable. Great viewing opportunities for children also!
I don’t wish to burden the wildlife with adverse publicity, so I urge folks to be cautious and respectful. The point is to enjoy our natural history opportunities and encourage our children to be aware of the great outdoors. En route, you might also see mammals such as coyotes or deer – a bonus!
