Congratulations to Gazette sports writer Jeff Hansen on his 2017 Bell Memorial Award bestowed upon him by the Alberta Sports Hall of Fame and Museum.
I can echo much of the sentiment expressed in Kevin Ma's article (Gazette, March 1). In particular how important it is for a strong local sports scene. For those who do not know, the Bell Memorial Award recognizes media members who have made significant contributions to amateur sports in Alberta. The work Jeff Hansen has, and continues to do to this end makes him more than deserving of this award.
Having excellent programs and participation in youth/adult sports is buoyed by comprehensive local news coverage. Imagine the immense pride felt by athletes of all ages as they see their image on the pages of the Gazette. The excitement of being interviewed for an article on that game, tournament or season.
A community that has benefitted from all Jeff Hansen has done for our local sports and athletes owes him a great big "Atta' boy!" Congratulations Jeff.
