In her letter complaining about speeding tickets, Irene Tremblay makes a big show of supporting a democratic system to support peoples’ rights and freedoms. Too bad she doesn’t seem to think about using her freedoms responsibly or accepting that there are consequences to her actions.
Speed limits exist for a reason. I’ve seen far too many drivers tearing down residential and suburban streets like they’re in the Indy 500, apparently because they feel it’s their God-given right to go as fast as they want without ever thinking about the consequences. Perhaps if Tremblay and other people like her actually drove according to the speed limits, they wouldn’t be getting these tickets in the first place.
As for photo radar being a cash cow, its critics seem to forget that it’s essentially a voluntary tax. If you want to kill the cash cow, don’t feed it. It’s one thing to complain about taxes, since we all have to pay them, but whining because your “right” to speed — something that isn’t in the Charter of Rights and Freedoms last time I checked — was violated is simply refusing to accept responsibility for your actions. All you have to do is obey the speed limits and you won’t get caught.
It’s as simple as that.
