I was shocked to hear Coun. Bob Russell referring to the farmers’ market as a “Flea Market” during this week's council. As a 15-year resident of St. Albert, I take a great deal of pride in the farmers’ market and what it represents for our community. People come from all over the area to spend their money here each weekend, and it’s a market that has become recognized across the country. I expected more from Mr. Russell. He promised to bring class and professional mediation to council, not to insult our most popular community events. Our elected officials should be proud of what this city has accomplished, but instead he chose to belittle it and mock it. I can only imagine how the many volunteers and vendors reacted to his comment, referring to their hand-made crafts and wares as items belonging in a flea market. I'm sure they would all appreciate a retraction and an apology. He certainly owes them one, as well as the thousands of people who support the farmers’ market each weekend.
