Gazette Criticism wrongly placed

Your recent comments in Our View titled, “It’s time for council to admit its mistake” (Gazette, Nov. 4), reads like an “I told you so” type of rebuke.

Your recent comments in Our View titled, “It’s time for council to admit its mistake” (Gazette, Nov. 4), reads like an “I told you so” type of rebuke. For some unknown reason, you seem to be picking on two councillors by name, as somehow the ones to be highlighted in council’s mistake.

Here are some facts that should have tempered your comments, but were ignored:

(a) The council meeting that made the decision was “in camera,” therefore we do not know the details that were discussed, and therefore we should not pass judgment too quickly.

(b) The city is not a party to the lawsuit, but gave moral support to Mr. Draper. We do not know the reason why it gave moral support, or the debate pro/con that led to the conclusion.

(c) Two councillors, Sheena Hughes and Cam McKay, opposed the funding of the lawsuit, thereby not agreeing that the city should have any part of it.

(d) The $20,000 limit proposed by Mr. MacKay represents the funds the city already spent on the case. Thank God, somebody has the courage and moral principle to object to further mindless waste of our precious resources.

Instead of complimenting and thanking Sheena and Cam for their excellent work for us all, you present your opinion in such a way apparently to cast a negative light upon them. Your criticism should have been placed on the “nameless” other four councillors and mayor.

I think I speak for all of us normal and otherwise sane residents when I say “Gimme a break, eh?”
