Gazette columnist should take his own advice

I write about Mr. Brian McLeod’s comments (Gazette, Jan. 3) titled “Resolve to Think Clearly in 2018.” His aim was to “… give you the benefit of my wisdom and strongly recommend a resolution most of you need to embrace.

I write about Mr. Brian McLeod’s comments (Gazette, Jan. 3)  titled “Resolve to Think Clearly in 2018.”

His aim was to “… give you the benefit of my wisdom and strongly recommend a resolution most of you need to embrace.” In the remaining four paragraphs he then says he thinks over 95 per cent of the population other than himself are, to use his word, “stupid.” He gives no advice on how we should recover from this. I guess he thinks we should simply shake our heads and snap out of it!

Mr. McLeod’s diatribe is clearly driven by his unhappiness and frustration with the results of our civic election last fall. It’s evident by him saying that councillor Sheena Hughes is the sole remaining person in our city who is only not stupid but is rather someone “…showing leadership and trying to accomplish some real work.”

His last two paragraphs concerning other members of city council, both old and new, are simply opinionated meanness coupled with the stench of sour grapes. His statements are in fact examples of what most St. Albertans don’t like and why our new mayor and council were elected – while some others were not.

Mr. McLeod’s insults, condescending opinions and his recommendation are unacceptable. They are unworthy of a writer for any newspaper since most of them, hopefully, don’t consider their readers stupid. Mr. McLeod needs to follow his own advice – and think clearly – before he writes all his future articles.

David Merritt, St. Albert
