Re: “Unsigned letter detailing a myriad of concerns was not very neighbourly” (Letters, Wednesday, Aug. 31). Christine, I feel your pain — truly I do! Unfortunately, some people think and act like they are the only people living on the block.
I too have the pleasure of having one those neighbourly neighbours as well. Mine, however, took it upon herself to lop off the tops of three trees in my yard! According to the RCMP, I can charge her with mischief; however, being the neighbour that I am, I will not do this. I have spoken to my neighbour; however, I never did receive an explanation as to why these trees are bothering her so much that they needed to be chopped off, and the token apology she mustered was even more condescending. Over the years (20-plus), we have put up with this neighbour's children invading our privacy daily (trampoline), girls waking us up in the early hours of the morning every Saturday (squealing children in a wading pool at 8 a.m. — yes, we heard them!) her cats using our flower bed for a litter box, and her cats leaving their trophies (robins, mice, squirrels) for us on our driveway.
Not once did we complain about how she has infringed on our life. Why? Because we are neighbours and we all have to live here together. We may not agree on everything but we keep to ourselves, we respect our neighbours’ privacy and property and we respect the laws of this city as well.
All you can do is keep living, Christine; don't let one bad apple in the block spoil your enjoyment of your home. I have moved on from my tree incident in hopes of being a better person for it. You too should know that you are a better person for ignoring such people who are nothing more than bored.
