Some cities build roads around or over trees. Here in St. Albert, the Botanical City, we bulldoze straight through trees, taking them out, to build a road, the St. Anne Street extension.
It appears that the city has tried to hide the destruction of these 100-year-old trees, which were established at the time Father Albert Lacombe was building our community of St. Albert. The environmental and historical destruction of these ancient trees seems to have come to light, only at the last minute, when nothing can be done to save them, not during the community consultation.
This blunder by the city indicates that our St. Albert is in immediate need of a tree bylaw for both public AND private land, in line with many other great Canadian cities, if we are to maintain a green canopy and truly be a Botanical City where we Cultivate Life.
