My husband, my in-laws and I decided to go out for supper to a restaurant on Sunday, Sept. 5. Expecting to have an enjoyable, relaxing meal, I was surprised when we became the subject for a couple’s amusement seated at the next table.
Not only did they offer each other a running commentary on everything we ordered, they also took great pleasure in laughing at my husband when he helped his father cut up his food. To me, common sense would say that there is more going on than meets the eye when someone has to help a grown man cut up his food. Would it make any difference to this couple to know that my father-in-law has Alzheimer’s and going out for dinner is a way for my mother-in-law to take a break from care giving for a few hours?
I found this couple’s reaction to the situation quite appalling and it was especially shocking because they were well-aged seniors themselves. I hope they continue to enjoy their happy golden years and never have to endure the frustration and embarrassment we experienced that Sunday night.
