Councillor should treat voters with respect

Clearly the St. Albert Public Library letter-writing campaign is working. Whereas the library was barely on city council’s radar before, despite real need for more space given population growth in St. Albert, thanks to Coun. Bob Russell's foolish threat, it certainly is now.

The large number of library supporters in St. Albert, who certainly outnumber the St. Albert Think Tank or whatever the anti-tax lobby calls itself nowadays, may start to realize that some members of this council actually pose a threat to our library services either through disengagement or outright hostility.

Councillors need to take notice, and library supporters need to actually make the effort to get out to vote the next time they have a chance to support municipal politicians who will make a meaningful commitment to community library services.

As for Mr. Russell, he needs to treat voters with respect, even when he disagrees with them. If he had a real commitment to democracy, the level of engagement with this important community issue would delight him.
