It appears to me that St. Albert’s newly elected councillor is a bit confused as to how a democratic municipality functions. Since Bob Russell ran his election campaign on a platform of vast experience in municipal politics, it seems odd that he would believe that he is somehow above listening to the views of the people that he represents. The issue of a new library branch has been heavily debated for some time now, and has been proven over and over a necessity to the community of St. Albert.
However, it does not matter where your personal views stand in regards to the library branch issue, if you have a city council that does not value its citizens’ views in the slightest. Bob Russell’s comments were that of a bully trying to intimidate the people he represents, which is not in any way right or effective. The fact that he would go so far as to punish the individuals who care so much about their city that they took time and care into sending an email to him is atrocious.
I would encourage people to continue writing emails, making phone calls and letting their voices be heard. Do not accept the threats Bob Russell has made, and keep them in mind come next election.
