Contraceptives are not the answer

The function of our society is to nurture families so that we can continue as a species; the family is the cornerstone of society. Whereas, it would be easy to hide the symptom of unwed or unwanted pregnancies by throwing contraceptives at it, it would be ignoring the larger problem of the lack of understanding of sexuality and human dignity, and the resultant damage to our society. It would be easy also to blame the “Patriarchy” on all of society’s problems, after all, old white men created society, right?

Contraceptives have led to the objectification of women (and men), and has reduced sex to gratification of self instead of the unification of a married couple and the procreation of our species. This objectification of people has led men and women to become addicted to pornography since the goal of sex is being redefined as simply sexual gratification. Consider that the average age of initial exposure to pornography is 11, and that every 30 minutes a porn film is made in the U.S., and that pornography use increases marital infidelity by 300 per cent – to mention just a few statistics.

The divorce rate in North America hovers around 50 per cent, yet the divorce rate among Catholics who do not contracept is between 1-5 per cent.

This objectification of women has made it so that losing one’s virginity has become the definition of a man, and has made a laughing stock out of chastity and virtue. People believe they are “more of a man” by the number of sexual conquests. A true man has control of his (or her) base desires and does not let his desires control him (or her).

Pope Paul VI put out a document 50 years ago this year called Humane Vitae with very prophetic insights into our time. He predicted that contraception would lead to more marital infidelity and lower moral standards, the increase in the objectification of women and governments imposing contraception on their citizens. It’s irrefutable that all these things have come true. Perhaps the Church, in her 2000 years of wisdom, has something relevant to offer.
