Coach's comments about Paul Kane football completely offside

As a current student at Paul Kane High School, even though I have no personal involvement in the football program, I was thrilled Wednesday morning to hear that we would have our own football team.

As a current student at Paul Kane High School, even though I have no personal involvement in the football program, I was thrilled Wednesday morning to hear that we would have our own football team.

I began reading the article in Saturday’s paper with a smile on my face, but when I approached “Big blow to SACHS,” I was a little put out by the comments of SACHS’ head coach Sam Johnson.

“In a perfect world Johnson wanted Paul Kane to kick-off its first season in 2012 so the SACHS players going into Grade 12 in the fall could finish their high school careers with the program they started with.”

Now I don’t know about you, but I think this sounds very selfish. No matter what year PK starts its football program, there are going to be players that would be going into Grade 12. If they were to start in 2012, what about next year’s Grade 11 players? Would they not be going into Grade 12 come fall 2012? Would they not have to go through the exact situation that is happening, just a year later?

And not only that, but to go so far as to say that former Skyhawk players that go to PK would have to choose between the two is completely unfair. These students are Paul Kane students. Just because Paul Kane hasn’t had its own football team until now does not mean that any of those boys are indebted to whatever SACHS’ football program has done for them.

Now, maybe I’m stepping outside of my boundaries by saying these things because, as I said before, I have no personal involvement in football. But as a Grade 11 student at Paul Kane, I am excited to be able to watch my own school’s football team go into action next year.
