City should stick to necessities

Re: Water Water Everywhere. Coun. Sheena Hughes made an excellent statement on the exorbitant utility costs in St Albert. The flat rates, supplementary capital contribution fees, and all the extras are higher than the actual usage cost of the water that is consumed. As indicated, the redirection of grant monies to art, culture and downtown redevelopment has now been placed on the people to pay in utility costs.

I am quite happy with all that money not being redirected to art, culture and so on, but to be used to provide St Albert residents with affordable water. For the majority of city council to approve the redirection of the funding in the first place away from providing affordable basic necessities for its residents is extremely selfish.

If you need money for luxury art and culture items have bake sales or sell popcorn at the farmers’ market. Other municipalities and governments are taking measures to help their residents during these struggling economic times. The City of St. Albert as usual has its hands in the residents’ pockets once again.
