Changes at Fountain Park could add more pool space

St. Albert should be very proud of its strong swimming community, from young children learning water safety to competitive youth and active seniors.

St. Albert should be very proud of its strong swimming community, from young children learning water safety to competitive youth and active seniors. I’ve logged hundreds of hours training and coaching at Fountain Park as a competitive triathlete and swim coach, much of which was prior to its renovation to add a second pool in 1998.

Unfortunately, while the renovation added a pool, it also compromised the existing pool. Half of the lanes in the original pool are now intersected by the addition of a large peninsula, reducing water space and versatility and creating poor lifeguarding sightlines.

With Servus Place providing for St. Albert’s recreational pool needs, a cost effective remedy to the continued shortage of pool space for lessons and training would be to remove the peninsula in the rec pool at Fountain Park, creating a second eight-lane pool.
