In response to Rick Owen's "Ode to Better Priorities"
Using verse may show some intellect,
But it doesn't mean the facts are correct.
For Mr. Owen to suggest that bird deaths caused by cats are overblown also suggests he possibly didn't do his research. Perhaps more interested in getting everything to rhyme.
A three-year study by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, as reported by USA Today in January 2013, and CBC News Jan. 30, 2013, found that cats kill from 1.4 billion to as many as 3.7 billion birds in the continental US every year. Also an Environment Canada study, reported by CBC News, Oct 1, 2013 found that cats account for 200 million bird deaths a year in Canada. This study revealed that "kitty-cams" attached to house cats that are let out at night can kill up to 10 to 12 birds a night.
This even amazed me, but it is in the study.
St. Albert, with all of its trees has been blessed with an abundance of birds of assorted species. Spend some quiet time to get to know them and appreciate them while you responsibly keep your cat inside. Ours has for the last 12 years.
So keep your cat in during our nights,
Put up a feeder and enjoy the sights
Spend some free time watching the birds,
Not in the garden, collecting cat turds.
