I found the incident involving Dr. Jon Cooper and his ATV very disappointing. I have great respect for our local RCMP. On the two occasions I required their assistance they were very professional and considerate. I want their professionalism to continue and they should address this silliness with honesty.
Recognizing that the RCMP's explanations are somewhat restricted, it still appears to be anal persecution. If, as the RCMP stated, the four-by-four vehicle with flashers was a danger to traffic, then why do the charges not indicate that? No they elected to use (or misuse) a bylaw that is surely not intended to restrict snow clearing by ATVs. Perhaps they would have charged me with jaywalking as I tried to free my vehicle, which was partially on a public roadway. (whoops!). Big thanks to the young fellow who stopped and assisted me.
I am disappointed in our mayor who failed to provide any meaningful insight or review of the matter. He needs to lead and support proper use of the bylaws. It is understood that we cannot cover every incident when a bylaw is approved. Some common sense is necessary. For example, my son received a ticket from a bylaw officer for parking on a private roadway. He was parked partially on his own driveway, in 18 inches of snow, with the roadway not plowed or identifiable and the car running while loading his stereo. I expect more from our RCMP.
