I am writing in response to the letter written by Robert Good in regards to the bike helmet lecture by RCMP (Gazette, Aug. 20). I of all people am so aware of brain injuries, and I would think you would want to be careful as well. It may not be you that causes an accident with your bicycle but someone else causing you to have one. I always wear a helmet, and thank god for that.
Two examples of where I was so thankful I had a helmet: First, some one rode into me with their bicycle hitting my tire, causing me to lose control hitting the curb and hitting my head on the curb. I had scrapes etc., my helmet was dinged but my head was safe. If I did not have a helmet the result could have been different. The second incident I was peddling when someone ran in front of me and to avoid hitting them or a car I lost control and dumped the bike. Same thing, I hit my head, no lasting effect, except I injured my leg quiet seriously. The bottom line helmets do save head injuries.
Kudos to the RCMP for talking to you about helmets. You are not invincible because you are a vet. Wear a helmet, it may save you.
