A progressive city needs facilities

Re: Norm Harley’s letter (Gazette, Jan 15). This reader can only take so much of Mr. Harley’s negativity towards this city. In the letter he writes about the turf football field in Riel being only one in Canada.

Re: Norm Harley’s letter (Gazette, Jan 15). This reader can only take so much of Mr. Harley’s negativity towards this city. In the letter he writes about the turf football field in Riel being only one in Canada. This is a statement that is completely false and if he hasn't noticed, similar but much flashier and more expensive facilities exist in Edmonton and surrounding areas. Spruce Grove even has two turf fields. The Riel facility was built in a cheap manner that actually embarrassed St. Albert as it did not have proper change facilities. That was an example of council being too fiscally responsible.

Norm, I'm guessing you don't use the arenas and pools that are at capacity either? If you did you would notice it is time for another rink and pool to accommodate growing families. There is no doubt that council wastes money, but the way you want it, St. Albert would be stuck in 1990 with no new facilities to accommodate growth.

It's obvious there will be two sides in this election: the don't-spend-a-dime group, and those who embrace a growing, progressive city. I know what side you will be on. Hopefully most residents will elect a fiscally responsible council that will embrace growth, as it’s needed. The other option is if you don't like it, then this may not be the city for you.

Gary Harvey, St. Albert
