I went out on my favourite walk a few days ago, down the south end of St. Anne Street. There I see workmen erecting bright yellow poles. They had a hydraulic lift and were busy erecting the said poles.
These poles were, and are, bright yellow and were decorated by a series of what appeared to be yellow buffalo skulls complete with horns.
From a fair distance they appeared to be quite ugly. From closer up they were more ugly. Furthermore, they were being planted in the middle of a very good flower bed. Aha! New lights, I thought, for the flower bed.
From closer up I found myself looking at three yellow poles with the images of ducks – bright yellow ducks – climbing (vertically) up each pole.
Now, like most of us, I have seen ducks in various parts of the world, but never any capable of climbing vertically up a pole. They don’t have the feet for it. Maybe a fictionalized duck, like Donald could do it, in the movies – but not real ducks.
But, maybe we in St. Albert have another first?
So, who authorized such an affront to ducks and to good taste?
I know sometimes things can get approved under the generic term “community art project” but this gruesome monstrosity should be retired to the woodpile in the picnic area in the park.
We need our flower bed back.
