With all due respect for teacher, Matt Diederichs (Gazette, Oct. 18) and his Grade 9 class, I personally empathize with MP Michael Cooper’s view. All politics aside, as a pensioner I find the amount of the funds paid to Omar Khadr obscene. We repatriate a Canadian citizen from the United States to freedom in Canada and then pay him enough money to be set up for life. A child soldier who killed an American is rewarded for his Canadian citizenship? What about pensioners living at minimum income and our veterans who were never compensated anywhere near this level for their sacrifices for Canada. What message are we really sending to our children and to the world?
