Consider needs of young people at the ballot box

The plebiscite has taken main attention during this election. And I know that a lot of people who are against further building of facilities are looking at their tax dollars very closely.

The plebiscite has taken main attention during this election. And I know that a lot of people who are against further building of facilities are looking at their tax dollars very closely. I certainly understand everyone has limited means and need to consider how every dollar is spent. However, I have a plea to make. I ask voters to not only think of themselves, but also others in the city. It`s one thing to do the right thing for yourself, but I think it takes more courage to think of others when you vote. Will your vote make a difference for others in your community? Specifically in this election, i`m asking voters to also consider younger people such as myself who can`t vote yet. As a younger person, I am really proud to call St. Albert my home. I would take it over any city out there. I have been given opportunities in this city that has helped me grow immensely. Part of that has to do with all of the schools, facilities, and programs that are available in our city. However, there is always room for improvement. For me, the library has been one location that I have always wished was bigger to accommodate more of us. It`s not just a space, but a sense of community that you get from locations like the library. I`m sure others can make similar cases for the other facilities listed in the plebiscites. I would like to remind voters that the plebiscites are not binding. Nothing will be built with a yes vote for any of the facilities listed. A yes vote leads to further planning and review to see if the facilities should be built. A no vote, however, could be irreversible this term if several of the candidates follow through with their promise to only consider the plebiscite results in their decisions. I would hope that whatever the results may be, the new council will review all information about the planned facilities and make a well-balanced and informed decision for the overall benefit of our community. And I ask voters to please consider all of us in the community, including younger people. Your vote will affect us greatly going forward in the future. Linda McGregor, St. Albert
