Football weekend
St. Albert’s bantam and peewee teams huddle up this weekend at Larry Olexiuk Field in week two of the Capital District Minor Football Association regular season.
Today’s kick-off times are noon for the junior varsity Colts against the Wolverines in the peewee nine-a-side division and 2:30 p.m. for the senior varsity Palmer 49ers against the Edmonton Mustangs in the bantam Susan Morgan Division.
Sunday the senior varsity peewee Riders play the Fort Saskatchewan Falcons at 9:15 a.m. and the junior varsity Fury tackles the Falcons at noon in the bantam Marv Mills Division.
Midget 15 Flyers
The first of five exhibitions for the St. Albert Flyers starts today in the Alberta Minor Midget AAA Hockey League.
Puck drop is 5:15 p.m. against the SSAC Bulldogs at Millwoods Arena.
Tuesday the midget 15 Flyers face off against the KC Centennial at 7 p.m. at Terwillegar Community Recreation Centre.
The league opener is Sept. 28 against the Grande Peace Storm at 7:45 p.m. at Go Auto Arena.
Last season the Flyers won provincials while going overall 30-11-5 after finishing tied for third in the north division at 21-10-3.
The new head coach of the Flyers is J.T. Bartlett.
Sabres preseason
The St. Albert Gregg Distributors Sabres close out the John Ferguson Memorial Preseason Tournament with a pair of games at Terwillegar Community Recreation Centre.
The Sabres skate today against the Lloydminster Bobcats at 12:30 p.m. and Sunday against the Sherwood Park Flyers at 3:30 p.m.
The tournament started with the 5-1 win against the SSAC Lions and Thursday’s score against the Fort Saskatchewan Rangers was unavailable at press time.
The Sabres unveil their Alberta Major Bantam Hockey League lineup Friday against the KC Squires at 8:15 p.m. at Callingwood Twin Arenas and the home opener is Saturday versus SSAC at 2:15 p.m. at Go Auto Arena.
The new head coach of the Sabres is Steve Ewaskiw of the 2019 midget 15 AAA provincial champion St. Albert Flyers.
Impact Fall Cup
The inaugural Impact Fall Cup, hosted by the St. Albert Soccer Association, kicks off Friday at Riel Park.
The tournament consists of Tier I U13, U15 and U17 teams, but at press time the list of participants and the schedule were still to be determined.
The Impact Fall Cup is also a fundraiser for the St. Albert Soccer Hardship Fund to assist families requiring financial support in order for their children to play the sport.
The U15 Tier I St. Albert Impact males are also using the tournament as a fundraiser for the National Cup through 50/50 draws and other initiatives.
The Impact are the third SASA male team since the 2016 fourth-place U14 Impact and the 1989 gold-medal winning U18 Cougars to represent Alberta at the nationals as provincial champions.
The 12-team National Cup is Oct. 9 to 14 at Ivor Dent Sports Park in Edmonton.
Alberta plays Halifax County United and PEI FC in group B of the qualification phases.
The Impact will be joined by Foothills FC 15 at nationals after both teams placed first in their respective pools at the eight-team provincials for berths in the Aug. 25 final at Calgary and the gold-medal game was 1-0 for the Impact on Dieu-Merci Michel’s fifth goal of the tournament.
The U15 Impact are coached by Kondeh Mansaray, the SASA club program head coach.

Atom football
Week two results for St. Albert’s atom teams in the Wildcats (North/South) Division of the Capital District Minor Football Association are as follows:
Vikings: Sherwood Park Wolverines Blue scored on the first play of the game before the Vikings clamped down defensively as Dillon White picked off two passes.
A rushing touchdown by Julian Ammar tied it at seven.
Late in the game, the Vikings marched the ball to the two-yard line, but were unable to score.
Buccaneers: Cameron Foster intercepted two passes in the 21-0 loss to Sherwood Park Wolverines White.
Daniel Talaber also provided leadership filling in at quarterback.
Jaguars: Sherwood Park Rams Green scored on its first two possessions before the Jaguars settled down to stay in contention with their bigger and experienced opponents in the 28-7 loss.
Lucas Massey and Milo Harty had good showings along with rookies Max Wierenga and the Anderberg twins, Nicholas and Alexander.
