Paul Kane division one men highlight high school volleyball updates

The Paul Kane Blues are the real deal in men’s volleyball as the No. 2 ranked 4A team in the province.

Paul Kane is 4-1 (13 GW/7 GL) in the metro Edmonton division one league and 19-6 overall after Monday’s 25-23, 24-26, 25-19, 25-19 decision against the St. Francis Xavier Rams (0-5) in St. Albert.

William Aberhart Orange of Calgary is No. 1 in the first Alberta Schools’ Athletic Association rankings of the season.

Also listed top-10 in 4A from metro Edmonton league are the No. 3 Strathcona Lords (2-2), No. 5 Harry Ainlay Titans (4-0), No. 5 Archbishop Jordan Scots (3-1) and the No. 9 Jasper Place Rebels (2-2), last year’s division one and provincial champions.

Paul Kane's lone loss in league play was 25-20, 24-26, 15-25, 22-25 to Ainlay in the second match of the season.

Paul Kane’s record includes two third-place finishes in tournament action before winning the 10th annual Boom Volleyball Classic last weekend at St. Francis Xavier High School.

The next tournament is in Red Deer in the middle of the month.

The Paul Kane roster consists of five returnees from the 2-8 non-playoff division one team, plus nine Grade 12s.

Co-captain Bryce Neuls has also committed to the Alberta Golden Bears next season.

The team’s head coach is Ben Grabia, a former student athlete at Paul Kane.

Today at 5 p.m. Paul Kane hosts the Ross Sheppard Thunderbirds (2-2), followed by the 6:30 division one lady Blues (0-5) against the Memorial Marauders (0-5) of Stony Plain.

Monday the lady Blues entertain the St. Albert Skyhawks (2-3) at 5:30 p.m.

Bulldogs dig it

The Bellerose Bulldogs are undefeated in metro Edmonton division two men’s volleyball after the fifth match victory of the season.

Monday’s scores against the Holy Trinity Trojans (0-5) were 25-23, 20-25, 25-17, 25-21 at Bellerose.

The 5-0 (15 GW/3 GL) record includes the season-opening 25-16, 25-16, 25-21 sweep of the St. Albert Skyhawks (2-3).

Today at 5:30 p.m. Bellerose hosts the Lillian Osborne Legends (4-1).

Meanwhile, the division two lady Bulldogs (2-3) visit the Austin O’Brien Crusaders (0-5) today at 6:30 p.m.

Sturgeon spikers

Today’s metro Edmonton volleyball doubleheader at Sturgeon Composite High School starts with the division three men’s match.

First serve is 5 p.m. between the Sturgeon Spirits (0-5) and St. Peter the Apostle Spartans (3-2) of Spruce Grove.

At 6:30 p.m. the division two lady Spirits (3-2) are in action against the Archbishop Jordan Scots (3-0).
