SAPEC volleyball
The St. Albert Physical Education Council serves up another season of junior high volleyball Tuesday.
Four boys’ and four girls' matches are scheduled involving eight of the nine SAPEC teams: Ecole Alexandre-Tache Scorpions, Elmer S. Gish Warriors, ESSMY Leopards, Lorne Akins Gators, Morinville Wolves, Richard S. Fowler Falcons, Vincent J. Maloney Marauders and William D. Cuts Crusaders. The Sir George Simpson Voyageurs have the bye.
Last year’s SAPEC Tier I city champions were Lorne Akins for the boys and Simpsons’ three-peat for the girls.
Starting 2 p.m. Friday is the annual SAPEC tournament, sponsored by Active Physio Works, with 16 boys’ and 16 girls’ teams competing in 102 best-of three matches.
The girls play at VJM and the SkyDome while the boys are split between Simpson, ESSMY and Alexandre-Tache.
Saturday's finals are 3:15 p.m. for the girls at VJM and the boys at Alexandre-Tache.
Last year Fowler defeated Simpson in the girls’ final and the R.F. Staples Thunderbirds of Westlock beat Lorne Akins in the boys’ final.
High school golf
A pair of St. Albert Skyhawks qualified for the Alberta Schools’ Athletic Association golf championships with low scores at the Edmonton zone tournament Tuesday.
Brooke Brezovski shot a 76 to finish fifth out of 28 competitors at the Stony Plain Golf Course and is among the top three females not on the winning four-person Strathcona Lords to advance to provincials next week.
Placing ahead of the Glendale Golf & Country Club ladies’ club champion were Jenna Bruggeman (69) of Strathcona, Ella Gifford (74) of the Beaumont Bandits and Alexa Wingnean (74) of Strathcona.
Regan Ackroyd (95) of the Paul Kane Blues was seventh.
In the male tournament, Ethan Wilson carded a 75 to tie Spencer Florchuk of the Fort Saskatchewan Sting for third place in the field of 97 at The Links in Spruce Grove.
This year Wilson repeated as the Glendale junior male champion.
The zone winner was Blake Reimer (73) of the Harry Ainlay Titans and Nick Rimmer (74) of Strathcona was the runner-up.
Josh Holzer (81) and Cayden Clark (82) of the Paul Kane Blues, Kyle Racich (82) of the Skyhawks and Kolby MacDonald (83) also placed among the top 25 males.
Strathcona and Harry Ainlay also qualified in the team event.
Provincials are Monday and Tuesday at the Alberta Springs Golf Resort in Red Deer and the Innisfail Golf Club.
At last year’s provincials, Brezovski finished fourth overall (75-80) out of 69 females after shooting an 82 at zones in Stony Plain.
Jiu-jitsu action
The next True North Grappling Championship at Servus Credit Union Place pounds the mats Saturday.
The Brazilian jiu-jitsu tournament is open to all belt and skill levels from ages five and up.
Approximately 300 competitors from local clubs, plus Calgary, British Columbia and Saskatchewan are registered.
The action runs from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Sarasota Homes field house.
The event is hosted by True North Grappling Ltd., with assistance by Luke Harris, owner and head instructor of the Hayabusa Training Centre in Campbell Business Park.
Last weekend Harris competed at the Pan IBJFF Jiu-Jitsu No-Gi Championship in New York and won the super-heavyweight black-belt division and open weight class, consisting of all black-belt medallists.
Last month in Las Vegas, Harris was recognized as the third highest-ranked world master 3 black belt in all weight divisions during the 2018/19 IBJFF season.
