How about that spring snowstorm? Some 25 centimetres fell in the region within 24 hours, causing treacherous driving conditions and traffic delays.
Many of us have probably had enough of these wintry blasts. After all, isn’t it spring now? Isn’t it time for playoff hockey and sipping lattĂ©s on sidewalk patios? Isn’t it time to think about tulip bulbs and ball season?
The answer to these questions, of course, is yes. It’s time that we were done with these flaky bombardments. But the fact is that the snow did come and it’s going to remain here for a while. So, as Canadians, it’s our duty to roll with the snowdrifts, as it were, and find the positives in this latest meteorological mayhem. This isn’t difficult. Unless you were one of the unfortunate ones involved in a vehicle pileup, there are many reasons why this spring onslaught of snow is a good thing:
• It’s good for the garden.
• It will cover up the dog feces for a couple more weeks.
• Snow is an excellent insulator.
• It’s good for farmers.
• It’s not the first of many to come, but one of the last for a while (glass-half-full type of idea.)
• It’s good for the lawn.
• We don’t tax snow in Alberta.
• Snowflakes are one of nature’s miracles. We have 63 gigazillion of them!
• It’s easier on the joints to walk on snow than bare concrete.
• It’s good for the economy (operators of snowplows, tow trucks and body shops will pump millions into local cash registers.)
• Shovelling builds character.
• You don’t have to feel guilty about procrastinating the switch to summer tires.
• It’s good for the trees (except for the ones that lost branches.)
• Children love snow.
• You may never have to use your lawn mower this year.
• Canadian summer: eight weeks of bad skiing? Not this year!
• It gives us something to complain about.
• St. Albert is still the best small city in Canada.
