Today is Dec. 24 and the Gazette’s final edition before Christmas.
As Santa prepares to hook the reindeer to the sleigh and head out on his annual magical flight to deliver millions of presents to the world’s children, we here at the Gazette decided to rush deliver one final list for the jolly fat man to help bring some Christmas cheer to the good people of St. Albert and surrounding area.
Traffic in the city is always a hot topic. Whether it is pedestrians leaping out of the way of inattentive drivers or motorists fuming as they endure long waits at some of our intersections, there are concerns on both sides of the wheel. This year, we ask for the city to receive its smart traffic flow system.
Health care is of paramount concern as the population ages. With cuts to staffing at seniors’ homes and a shortage of long term care beds across the province, we ask for better and sustained funding to help care for our aging population. Families in the region would also appreciate dedicated hospice care.
Out in Morinville, this year’s list would focus on a new public school. While Santa’s sack might be too small to fit an entire educational institution, it might be able to squeeze in a load of cash for construction.
Shelters for people in need are also sorely needed in the city. Whether it is for those trying to find a warm place to sleep or women and children escaping abuse we ask Santa to bring sanctuary for those scared, alone and in need.
To the province, a diversified economy to ease the pain of falling oil prices. Economics 101, and all our mother’s sage advice about putting all your eggs in one basket.
In the world of sports there is always need for improvements. Whether that is the county looking to improve on recreational opportunities or Morinville eyeing a new recreation complex, keeping busy is always important for every community. Here is a short list of possible ideas to fill our recreation needs: Change rooms/showers for Riel Recreation Park turf field, a sports bar – St. Albert hasn't had a sports bar since The Rink closed down a few years ago, a City of Champions sign at both ends of St. Albert Trail – apparently the one the City of Edmonton has is for sale, a fourth Leading Edge RunWild marathon championship for Paul Kane High School teacher Marc Meunier, and repeat performance by the fantastic firsts as Labatt's Cup premier men's provincial rugby champions.
Finally, as St. Albert city council continues to face division and each faction’s supporters in the community bicker we ask for some group counselling for our elected officials – perhaps collaborative divorce proceedings (we’re not sure who should get the cat).
And to Mayor Nolan Crouse, a day off.
To the St. Albert Taxpayers Association, a sense of humour and maybe a year living in Quebec or Scandinavia, where taxes are actually high.
Merry Christmas and to all a goodnight.
