LETTER: This is what we are teaching our kids

"As I got closer, I saw it was an entire school class playing laser tag provided by a mobile laser tag service."

On my walk through a school yard recently, I saw a number of young teens running around with what looked like small rifles. As I got closer, I saw it was an entire school class playing laser tag provided by a mobile laser tag service.

It was complete mayhem. Dozens of students with laser guns were running through the school yard and trees with the objective of shooting as many of their classmates as possible. I am at a loss as to what teachers were possibly attempting to teach the students with this activity. I would have asked an adult but there were none in sight. I realize this is laser tag but when government is advocating for gun control and we hear of horrible school shootings I think teachers could find better activities than one that encourages students to shoot their classmates.

From my way of thinking, shooting people is something we should be discouraging rather than teaching in our schools. I have sent a letter to the school board for an explanation. At the same time, they can explain how this is a good use of limited school funds.
