LETTER: Goal of zero property tax increase should be prime objective

letter-sta

I was very encouraged by the editorial, "Tax Folly," in the May 6 Gazette. Covid-19 HAS imposed a full blown recession on our province and a quick recovery is not likely. Our municipal administration should be doing what residence and businesses are doing – thinking outside the box; being innovative. Declaring a goal of zero property tax increase and working towards that reality should be their prime objective. If the province and/or the feds offer the municipality some relief, that will be a blessing. But for the immediate period, councillors should be pressing administration for every possible expense reduction to bring operating costs down to 2019 levels or better. Focus on the residents and businesses of St. Albert who are cutting costs wherever possible and show leadership by holding the line on property taxes.
