LETTER: Frustrating sewer backups could be avoided

"The city is doing their due diligence, so the rest is up to us residents of St. Albert and parents of school kids – the lesson starts at home."

During this time of COVID-19 and all that is going on in the world, we should be able to feel safe and secure in our own homes. But, those of us living on Mont Clare Place can’t. April 9 and July 23 we have experienced sewer backups which is all at the homeowners' expense as the city will not compensate due to the cause of the problem. We were advised that the April 9 occurrence was due to asphalt, wood and wipes. For July 23, it was asphalt and wipes.

What don’t you get, people? Listen to the news and read the paper which clearly state NOTHING BUT TOILET PAPER GETS FLUSHED. It doesn’t matter if the claim is “flushable wipes”, NO WIPES ARE FLUSHABLE! End of story.

We took it upon ourselves to address our concerns with Youville Home, Sigis, North Ridge Lodge, North Ridge Place and the Catholic School Board to ensure proper protocol is in place for the disposal of the wipes. The school board will take our concern into consideration as they get ready for students to resume classes in a month. As for the asphalt and wood, that has come from the work completed at the two schools on our street last year and this year. Asphalt from the paving and the wood from the trees that were cut to make changes for the buses.

Until now, our concern has been for the roots from the trees on the boulevard and the impact they have on the lines/drains. The city is working to get resolution as we have lived here for almost 40 years and never have we had to experience such stress. They will be pulling permits to ensure that the work is being adhered to, and we thank you for that going forward. The city is doing their due diligence, so the rest is up to us residents of St. Albert and parents of school kids – the lesson starts at home.

St. Albert
